Mid-Week Meander – “Head for the Hills”

The Mid-Week Meander was the first chance for the Sprite Club members to have a social drive since the COVID-19 lockdown

In March 2020 the Sprite Club Calendar listed that the first Mid-Week Meander had been scheduled and was themed “Head to the Hills” to assist the various business and communities that had been affected by the bushfires during the late part of 2019.

Unfortunately the effect of COVID-19 and the associated health risks during March caused the Sprite Club to postpone the event in line with the SA Health advice and the general health and wellbeing of the members.

Jump forward seven months and our trusty Mid-Week Meanderers, Russell and Judy Schmarr dug out the Run Sheet, wiped it with hand sanitiser and a few alcohol wipes and the Meander was ready to go!

Meeting at Tilley Reserve, Yatala Vale

The intrepid Meanderers met at Tilley Reserve at Yatala Vale, for some this was a journey in itself! With Social Distancing requirements and Contract Tracing signatures to complete, the Sprite Club members complied with the appropriate regulations and had a chance to catch up on the events of the past few months. There were Bugeyes, Sprites, Midgets, a Clubman & Mazda MX-5 plus a modern or two.

Soon Russell had mustered the group and they were on their Meandering way. As usual Russell and Judy had found a combination of roads that takes “the long way there and the short way back”. This route was no different with the Meanders stopping at Gumeracha to allow a regroup of the convoy. Here they were joined by Gary and Faye Brock and their Holden Tigra which has replaced their MGB GT.

A stop at the Warren Reservoir for a BYO morning tea allowed the Sprite Club members to enjoy this once secured area. These reservoirs have now been opened to the public for a number of outdoor activities including hiking and mountain biking or enjoying a picnic on the lakeside. Water sports including kayaking/canoeing and fishing along the shore or from a kayak are also allowed.

Once a coffee or tea and a couple of biccies had been completed the Meanderers were once again on the road. The weather was on the side of the group and most enjoyed a top down run through the scenic Adelaide Hills.

The lunch venue was the Charleston Hotel, here the Meanderers had the chance for more social catch-up and support this local business affected by the bushfires. With good food and a glass of their choice, all reported that they did not need anything else to eat on the way home!

Special thanks to Russell and Judy for arranging this Mid-Week Meander and thanks to the Meanderers for their support of the event. It was also the Sprite Club’s first social event since the COVID-19 pandemic and chance to review the regulations that have been put in place to allow the Sprite Club to conduct and enjoy these events.

If you missed this one, keep an eye on the website and calendar as more events are added as the year continues.
